Conus (Monteiroconus) sp.2 (Psarras*, Merle, Antonarakou & Efterpi, 2023)
Shell description (1)
Spire flat to medium conical, with slight concavity at early spire whorls. Early spire whorls slightly striated. Later spire whorls straight to slightly concave, faintly striated, resulting in a low conical outline. Sutural ramp straight to distinctly concave, with at least three spiral cords. Mean subsutural flexure shallow, moderately curved, moderately asymmetrical. Shoulder rounded to slightly angulate, with maximum diameter just below the shoulder. Last whorl broad, conical, straight. Aperture moderately wide, straight to slightly widening, towards a slightly twisted fasciole. Siphonal canal wide, straight. Multiple spiral grooves on the anterior third of the last whorl.
The studied specimens display a variability in morphology. The common elements, which have made us group these specimens under one taxon, are the spiral cords on the spire whorls and the relatively angulated shoulder. The specimens differ in the height of the spire, being flat to medium conical, flat spired to scalate, with straight to distinctly concave spires, and the width of the last whorl from wide to narrow. Furthermore, the angulation of the shoulder is variable, from slightly to distinctly angulated. These morphological variations are all considered intraspecific.
Remarks (1)
This species differs from the dashed Conus (Kalloconus) group (Psarras et al. (2021) in the presence of spiral cords on the spire whorls, a characteristic of Conus (Monteiroconus) da Motta, 1991, and the densely packed axial flammulae on the spire whorls. Other characters shared with that subgenus are the concave sutures, the conical spire outline and the large-sized, bulky shell.
