Conus (Contraconus) berryi (Petuch, 1994)
Description: Shell of average size for genus, wide, stocky, broad across shoulder, with low, flattened spire; shoulder sharply-angled, edged with large, rounded carina; early whorls faintly coronate; body whorl orna-mented with very-numerous, extre-mely-fine, almost-obsolete spiral threads; anterior tip of body whorl with 18-20 large spiral cords; aper-ture proportionally-wide, enlarging slightly at anterior end.
Holotype: UF66444, Length 65 mm.
Type Locality: Pinecrest Beds, from Petuch Unit 4 ("Black Layer"), APAC pit, Sarasota, Sarasota County.
Remarks: Contraconus berryi is most similar to the other low-spired Pinecrest left-handed cone, C. schmidti Petuch, 1991 (Plate 96, Figures F, G), but differs in being a much broader, wider, and less-elongated shell with a slightly-higher spire, and in being a smoother shell with less-prominent spiral sculpture.
Etymology: Named for Dr. Leonard Berry, Department of Geography, Florida Atlantic University.
