Conus (Lindaconus) martinshugari (Petuch, 1994)

 

 Description (2): Shell of average size for subgenus, broadly-cylindrical, heavy, with distinctly rounded, convex sides on the body whorl; shoulder slightly angled but rounded; spire low, with faintly canaliculate whorls; body whorl smooth, with 12-15 low, rounded spiral cords around anterior tip; aperture narrow; color pattern (when preserved) composed of 30-32 spiral rows of very small, closely-packed dots.

Holotype: UF66434, Length 82 mm.

Type Locality: Pinecrest Beds Fauna (upper beds), form Mule Pen Quarry, East Naples, Collier County.

Remarks: Conus martinshugari is most similar to the upper Pinecrest C. streami n. sp. (Plate 93, Figure E) from Petuch Unit 3, but differs in being a much larger, more cylindrical shell with more-convex sides and a lower spire, and in having more numerous and smaller dots in the color pattern.

Etymology: Named for Martin Shugar, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Hollywood, Florida.
